Sitting along the coast of San Pablo Bay is the city of Hercules. Founded in 1879, this city was once the location for the production of dynamite and black powder. Hercules got its name from the production plant, Hercules Powder Company, which was chosen as the name of the product to showcase how potent the dynamite was. In the 1960s, the plant transitioned from selling explosives to selling fertilizer.
After the transition, Hercules was heavily redeveloped in the 1970s and again in 2000. Today, Hercules is a transit-oriented community and a great location for many business professionals due to its close proximity to Berkley, as well as other major cities in the Bay Area. Hercules has a population of over 25,000 residents.
With its suburban appeal, the city is mostly comprised by two story detached and attached homes, as well as, one story commercial buildings divided into subdivisions. Also, Hercules is known for having some of the region’s top-scoring public schools.
The City is working on an Intermodal Transit Center which will include train, bus and ferry services.
